Above All Powers Song
Above All Powers Lyrics
Above all powers above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began
Above all kingdoms above all thrones
Above all wonders, the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what You’re worth
Crucified laid behind a stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all (repeat 2x)
Crucified laid behind a stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all
Like a rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all
Above All Powers Lyrics Discussion
The central theme of the Above All Powers lyrics is that it illustrates the Savior’s willingness to give up his exalted nature to live among us, minister to us, and endure hardships for us. This is expressed in Paul’s letter to the Philippians:
The lyrics celebrate the way that Jesus is above the things that the world calls great—kings, nature, wonders, kingdoms, thrones, wealth, and treasures. He is the truth, the way, and the life, and is above all creatures and created things.
The lyrics talk about the greatness of our God and tell us that He is higher and preeminent to anything and everything in heaven and on Earth. No human being can conceive what mighty things our Creator has done and can do.
The second part of the Above All Powers lyrics talks about how the magnificent and Almighty God confirmed His passion for us as He came down to Earth to save us lowly human beings from sin and destruction. He was willing to be crucified to redeem us from eternal damnation, demonstrating His infinite love for us. He died brutally suffering on the cross in our place.
The Above All Powers lyrics paint a beautiful picture of an Almighty God, who is above everything, but became like a rose trampled on the ground and took the fall for us. This shows that our God never forgets us and always thinks of us.
The song show us that we should be mindful in our worship as we honor and glorify the Absolute Being who is alone worthy of the highest praise and adoration we can give.
The Story Behind Above All Powers Lyrics
The story behind the song is quite interesting. One day, Paul Baloche was sitting alone in the church with his piano when he started to think about the glory and majesty of God. As he was deeply reflecting on the splendor of the Supreme Being and how much Jesus is greater than all the things the world reckons as great, the Above All Powers lyrics started to flow freely from his heart, and he wrote them down. However, he could not write the chorus for the song, and he set it aside for later.
Later, Baloche met Lenny LeBlanc with whom he had collaborated in writing many songs. When Baloche showed the verses of the song to LeBlanc, it captured his attention, and he was thoroughly fascinated by it. He observed that the song had no chorus and so came up with the words. However, the chorus was completely different from the main theme of the song, which talked about Christ’s greatness. The chorus depicted the pain and sorrow of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial in graphic detail.
When they finished writing the lyrics, the songwriters were so overwhelmed they started crying.
Michael W. Smith played this simple and inspiring song, which was traditional but with a touch of contemporary, during an inaugural prayer service for President Bush in 2001. He also included the song in his Album, “Worship.”
The song was nominated in both the 2002 and 2003 GMA Dove Awards for Song of the Year. Michael W. Smith’s version of the song, “Above All Powers,” won the “Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year” in 2002.
