All Hail the Power of Jesus Name — 1 Glorious Christian Song

All Hail the Power of Jesus Name is one of the most popular hymns known as the “National Anthem of Christendom.” This Christian song written by Edward Perronet first appeared in the November 1779 issue of the Gospel Magazine.

All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Lyrics

All hail the power of Jesus’ Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, and crown Him Lord of all!

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
Ye ransomed from the fall (2),
Hail Him Who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, and crown Him Lord of all!

Let every kindred, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball (2),
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, and crown Him Lord of all!

Oh, that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall! (2)
We’ll join the everlasting song,
And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, and crown Him Lord of all!

Edward Perronet was the son of an Anglican priest and an intimate associate of the Wesleys during the 18th century Christian Revival in England. His family came from the Huguenots of Switzerland. He published three volumes of Christian poems, which includes a poetic rendering of the Holy Bible. In 1784, Edward published a book anonymously entitled Occasional Verses, Moral and Social, which contains as its third entry the hymn titled On the Resurrection, the Lord is King, which is now known as All Hail the Power of Jesus Name. He died in 1792 in Canterbury, Kent, England.

Analysis of All Hail the Power of Jesus Name

The hymn is about worshiping the true king and lord Jesus Christ. The song is futuristic and the imagery is rich and enduring since the whole earth —from the “chosen seed of Israel’s race” and “sinners” and “martyrs” to “every kindred, every tribe on this terrestrial ball”—will sing the “everlasting song” at Jesus’ feet—and come and join in His coronation.

The first stanza of the hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name calls on worshipers to recognize the power in the name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11) and talks about angels falling at His feet (Revelation 5). The word diadem, meaning a crown, is found in the scripture verses (Job 29:14, Isaiah 28:5 and 62:3, and Ezekiel 21:26). The words refer to Revelation 4 when the four and twenty elders are falling down before the Lamb and casting their crowns, their diadems at His feet.

The second stanza of the hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name refers to the descendants of Israel, God’s chosen race, who have been ransomed by grace. The third stanza of the hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name symbolizes the picture of heavenly worship of every tribe, tongue, people, and nation (Revelation 5:9).

The fourth stanza of the hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name denotes a large crowd of people expressing homage, submission, or adoration. It means that every human will acknowledge Jesus as God, and admit his right to universal dominion. The hymn comes to a climax as everyone joins in the heavenly home with the blessed saints in eternal worship and where the song of praise will never end.
