Christian poems are inspiring, encouraging, and filled with abundant praise for our Glorious Father and His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christian poems are a wonderful way to thank God for His innumerable blessings, divine mercy through Christ, protection from evil and harm, and peace and joy in this world and after. While reading these Christian poems, we must be grateful to God for working in our lives daily redeeming us from sin and destruction.
Gently lead us is a Christian poem that is humble, honest about our frailty, and unashamed in the confidence that God will lead us to eternal life blessed with perfect joy and perfect knowledge of our Creator.
The author of the poem is Octavius Winslow (1808 – 1878). Known as The Pilgrim’s Companion, he was a prominent 19th Century evangelical preacher in England and America. Warm and devotional in style, Winslow’s writings are full of memorable pieces of spiritual edification and deep theological reflection.
Christian Poems — Gently Lead Us
Gently, Lord, oh, gently lead us
Through vale of tears,
Though thou’st decreed us,
Till our last great change appears.
As temptation’s darts assail us,
Or in devious paths we stray
Let thy goodness never fail us,
Lead us in thy perfect way.
In the hour of pain and anguish,
In the hour when death draws near
Suffer not our hearts to languish,
Suffer not our souls to fear.
As this mortal life is ended,
Bid us in thine arms to rest,
Till, by angel bands attended,
We awake among the blest.
Then, oh, crown us with thy blessing,
Through the triumphs of thy grace;
Then shall praises never ceasing
Echo through thy dwelling-place.
