Billy Graham Sermons: The Powerful Question We Can’t Escape
Of all the Billy Graham sermons recorded over his long ministry, this one stops people mid-thought. The setting is Chicago in 1971, where thousands have packed a massive arena. Plays, films, and even a rock opera are asking the same restless question about Jesus, and Dr. Billy Graham steps up to answer it.
There’s no showmanship here. He speaks plainly, like you’d talk to a friend who’s been wondering about something for years. Before it’s over, he has walked through the popular guesses about Jesus, the claims Jesus made about Himself, and the cross and the empty tomb, and he leaves you with a choice that’s hard to wave away.
That’s why this remains one of the most moving Billy Graham sermons you’ll find. Half a century later, the cultural references have aged, but the question hasn’t. If you’re searching, doubting, or just curious, press play and listen.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Sermon Summary: The Main Points
This is one of the Billy Graham sermons that begins with a question and takes its time answering it. Here are the main points he makes.
- Jesus is the sign. Graham opens in Luke 11:29 to 32, where people demanded a sign from Jesus. His point is that Jesus doesn’t give them a spectacle; He offers Himself, and the people of Nineveh and the queen of the south will stand as witnesses against those who ignore Him.
- We can’t escape Jesus. Graham notes how much of the culture of his day, including plays, films, and the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, kept circling back to Jesus. He compares the question running through all of it (“Who is He?”) to the one Paul asked on the road to Damascus.
- Popular answers fall short. Some call Jesus a madman, a revolutionary, a defender of the establishment, or the first hippie. Graham walks through each and argues that none fits the Jesus of the Gospels, who was building a spiritual kingdom rather than a political one.
- He was truly human. Jesus got hungry, tired, and thirsty, and He wept at a friend’s grave. Graham stresses that He faced every temptation we do and never sinned.
- He was more than a man. Jesus claimed to exist before Abraham and to be the Son of God, which is why His claims provoked such anger. Graham points to His authority to forgive sins and His power over storms, sickness, and demons as evidence that He was who He said He was.
- The cross shows His love. Graham describes the suffering of the crucifixion and Jesus’ prayer for forgiveness. He argues that Jesus stayed on the cross by choice, and that “It is finished” means God’s plan of salvation is complete.
- The resurrection is the heart of the gospel. Without it, Graham says, there is no good news at all. It is what drove the first disciples to tell the world that Jesus is alive.
- Faith is how you come to know Him. Graham points out that we rely on faith every day, in banks, in chairs, and in other drivers. He invites listeners to place that same trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, and the sermon ends with an invitation to receive Him publicly.
Why It Still Speaks Today (Billy Graham Sermons)
The cultural references are from 1971, but the question hasn’t aged. Billy Graham sermons endure because they speak plainly to ordinary people, and this one asks each listener to answer for themselves who Jesus is.
