Ants and the Grasshopper
On a beautiful summer afternoon, a grasshopper was jumping about, twittering and singing to its heart’s content. Seeing a group of ants passing by carrying ears of corn to their nest with great difficulty, it asked them, “Why are you toiling so hard? Come, let us play together.” To this, a wise Ant replied, “We are gathering food for the winter. Why don’t you join us?” The grasshopper said, “I am not much bothered about the winter. I am enjoying my time, and there is plenty of food around here.”
The ants continued to work and went on their way. Finally, winter arrived, and the grasshopper could not find any food and become starving and tired. It saw the ants enjoying the hard-earned food that they collected during the summer. Then, the grasshopper realized that it is better to be prepared for the days of necessity.
The Ants and the grasshopper is a beautiful original short tale by Aesop that illustrates that if you want to succeed tomorrow, you have to start working now. In the ants and the grasshopper fable, the ants planned for the long term and succeeded. However, the grasshopper failed to prepare and faced the consequences.
